Strategic Stakes of the Cuvette Grid Extension
Ewo and Mossaka occupy distinct yet complementary positions in the national development map. Ewo, administrative capital of Cuvette Ouest, sits at a crossroads between forested hinterlands and agrarian settlements, while Mossaka functions as a fluvial hub on the Congo River’s tributaries. Along the 104-kilometre right-of-way, pylons already stand the full length, and more than half of the conductors—roughly sixty kilometres—are installed despite challenging marsh terrain. The minister’s entourage credits the dry season for enabling swift pile driving and cable stringing, activities that are unforgiving during periods of high water. Bouya nonetheless urged contractors to leverage the remaining arid months to seal off residual tasks before the first heavy rains approach.
Chinese–Congolese Engineering Synergy
The deployment model blends Congolese oversight with Chinese execution, a configuration that has marked several flagship projects in the country’s energy and transport sectors. Technicians from the contracting consortium have brought specialised equipment for tower assembly, stringing operations and real-time monitoring of line sag. Parallel knowledge transfer initiatives allow Congolese engineers to apprentice on site, reinforcing national capacity for maintenance and eventual replication in other interior localities. In his walk-through, Minister Bouya saluted what he termed “a disciplined partnership anchored in results”, and he highlighted the near-perfect safety record registered since ground-breaking.

Although exact demand projections will be refined after commissioning, preliminary surveys suggest that electrification will lower the cost of doing business across retail, fisheries preservation and public service delivery. Health centres anticipate reliable cold chains for vaccines and essential medicines, while schools look forward to evening study programmes driven by consistent lighting. Local traders have voiced optimism that stable power could spur refrigerated transport of freshwater fish toward Brazzaville and even neighbouring markets, cushioning communities against commodity price volatility.
Residents interviewed during the ministerial visit also underscored intangible dividends: a perceived sense of inclusion in the national economic narrative and a renewed confidence in state institutions. With core civil works substantially completed, attention now shifts to testing, synchronisation and grid stability analyses. The Ministry of Energy, through its project management unit, is expected to publish a phased energisation schedule once load-flow simulations conclude. For his part, Jean Jacques Bouya has reiterated that the new assets must be operational while weather conditions remain favourable, pointing to the dry season’s logistical advantages.
In balancing speed with prudence, the government positions itself to honour the 2021 electoral pledge without compromising safety or efficiency.
